PERFORMATIVE APPENDAGES

This project explores the question: what happens when contemporary parametric buildings are re-purposed, adapted or retrofitted in the future? What happens when visually coded “smooth” or fully integrated forms collide with unanticipated future programs, technology or physical requirements?

The genesis of this project stems from documentation of physical insertions to existing buildings within New York City. These “performative appendages” are post original construction, perform a new function not germane to the building’s original program and are of a scale or quantity so as to create a formal tension with the original structure.

This project proposes to create a large scale connotative model (i.e. an object that allows the viewer to engage in a range of narrative structures) or folly to explore this intersection.
