This project was an art installation at Artisphere, a contemporary art museum in Arlington , VA before travelling to Miami Basel. Based on the massive crystal forms recently discovered in the Cave of Giants in Naica, Mexico, we wanted to explore the sense of awe and wonder that geometric irregularity and scale shift could produce in the viewer.
We were excited about the challenge of designing and building complex forms with the simple tools that we have available. The seed forms were based on the structure of the gypsum crystal, a hexagonal shaft with irregular ends. We unrolled the forms and calculated the angles using various programs.
